Upcountry Maui is one of the most peaceful and breathtaking areas on Maui. Located between approximately 2000 to 3000 feet elevation, sprawling ranch land, outstanding views and a perfectly temperate climate is what you’ll find in this area on the slopes of Haleakala.
One of the main attractions in Upcountry Maui is Haleakala National Park, which includes the majestic Haleakala volcano. This volcanic landscape offers a range of activities, such as hiking, camping and stargazing. The park also features stunning waterfalls, scenic drives, and several nature trails.
Upcountry Maui is located on the eastern side of Maui boasting picturesque clusters of neighborhood developments surrounded by lush, ranch land. Cattle, sheep, goats, deer and even the occasional wild boar will be spotted in the fields along the country roads. Upcountry is all about the laid-back, local vibe of the region.
Historic Makawao town is a “paniolo” or “Hawaiian cowboy” town with charming boutiques, art galleries, restaurants and bakeries. The residential neighborhoods throughout Makawao, as well as in neighboring Pukalani and Hali’imaile offer quaint communities built into the mountainside, offering some of Maui’s best scenic aerial views.
